myki on regional town buses

myki is a new ticketing system and operates on buses in Ballarat, Bendigo, Latrobe Valley, Seymour, Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula. myki is also valid for travel on V/Line rail services operating wholly within the Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat transit systems

myki will progressively be rolled out on V/Line train services from Melbourne to cities within the V/Line commuter belt including Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and the Latrobe Valley (Traralgon, Morwell, Moe). Keep visiting this website for updates.

myki also operates on all metropolitan services including V/Line services in Zone 1 + 2 to Melton and Sunbury.

myki will replace the current Metcard ticketing system on Melbourne’s train, tram and bus networks.

You can choose to use either Metcard or myki to travel on Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses. The existing Metcard ticketing system can still be used and will run alongside myki until December 2012. You can continue to use Metcards until advised otherwise, or you can make the switch to myki when you feel comfortable.

     Using myki

    Top up

myki is similar to a prepaid mobile. You top up your myki with value before you travel and simply keep it topped up so you're ready to go anytime.

You can top up your myki:

    • online at myki.com.au (link opens in a new window)
    • by calling 13 6954 (13 myki) before you travel (minimum $1, maximum $250)
    • on the bus via the bus driver (maximum $20)
    • at the myki Discovery Centre at Southern Cross Station.

If you have a registered myki, you can choose auto top up - the smart way to travel with myki money. Simply set and forget. Log in to your myki account now at myki.com.au (opens in a new window).

    Touch on and touch off

To use myki on regional town bus services, simply 'touch on' by touching your myki on the myki reader located by the bus door each time you board. At the end of each trip, simply 'touch off' when you disembark. Touching off ensures you receive the best fare for the way you travel.

     myki money or myki pass

myki is a reusable smart card that can store either a myki pass (travel days) or myki money (dollar value) and these are used to pay for your journey. When your myki money balance gets low or when your pass runs out, you just top up your card to keep travelling.

You can store both myki pass and myki money in your myki at the same time. That's because myki money can be used to pay for any travel outside of your myki pass zone(s).

     myki fares

Fares are based on duration and distance, with larger towns divided into different zones.

Your myki will calculate the best fare for the time and distance you travel.

For example, you are a concession passenger who travels to the shopping centre in the morning. As you enter the bus you touch on with your myki. You touch off when you leave the bus. You are charged $0.90 (2 hour, single zone). Three hours later, you travel to the library.

myki recognises you have already travelled that day and instead of charging you another $0.90 (2 hours, single zone) it only asks for $0.70 (the difference up to the daily rate of $1.60 for daily, single zone).

If you don't touch on and touch off with your myki, you will be charged a provisional fare.

Fares are effective from 1 January 2012 and are inclusive of Commonwealth Government GST.
