 Do students need concession cards?

16 years and under
If you are a student aged 16 and under (and don't travel with a Student Pass) you can travel on concession fares. You do not need a concession card.

17 years and over
If you are a student aged 17 and over, you must carry a valid concession card.

Travelling with a student pass
If you are a primary or secondary student travelling with a Victorian Student Pass or Regional Transit Student Pass, you must also have a Victorian Public Transport Student Concession Card with your pass number endorsed on your concession card.  The pass and concession card must be carried at all times when travelling.

Student Concession Cards are generally only available to Australian citizens and permanent residents.

 

 Concession cards for students

Victorian Health Care Cards
If you are 17 and over (and not travelling with a Student Pass) and have a Victorian Health Care Card, you can use your Health Care Card as proof of your concession entitlement. You do not need to apply for a Victorian Public Transport (VTP) Student Concession Card to travel on concession fares. For more information, see Health Care Cards.

School ID cards
A school identification card does not entitle students aged 17 years and over to buy concession fares.

VPT Student Concession Card 
If you are a primary or secondary school student travelling with a student pass you must have a VPT Student Concession Card. A VPT concession card is also a valid concession card for students aged 17 years and over.

 Eligibility criteria

Primary and secondary students must be studying full time and attend a school listed in the approved list of schools. Full time VCE and VCAL students studying at TAFE can apply.

Tertiary students must be studying full time and attend an approved course that is delivered on-campus at a college or university listed in the Approved Courses in Tertiary Institutions Register.

You must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia (Special Category Visa holders excluded). Students with refugee status, students studying as part of an approved overseas exchange program, or students with an Australian Development Scholarship are also eligible (proof such as a letter from your school / institution is required).

Unfortunately, you can't get a VPT Student Concession Card if you're:

  • enrolled in a masters, doctorate, or other postgraduate course
  • an overseas full-fee paying student (primary, secondary or tertiary)
  • enrolled in a tertiary course which is less than 10 weeks duration
  • enrolled in an apprenticeship course
  • enrolled in an off-campus course.

Important note: If you are undertaking a postgraduate or part-time course and you are on a low income, you may be eligible for a Health Care Card from Centrelink. This card provides concessions on public transport. For more information, visit centrelink.gov.au (link opens in a new window)

Students who reside in Victoria and cross the border to attend interstate schools listed in the Register of Approved Schools and interstate institutions shown in the List of Courses in Tertiary Institutions are eligible for a VPT Student Concession Card.

The ISIC (International Student Identity Card) is not accepted for concession travel on public transport in Victoria.

 Student passes

If you are a primary or secondary student with a Victorian Public Transport (VPT) Student Concession Card, you may be able to buy a student pass. The pass provides great savings for regular travellers.

The type of student pass you need depends on where you travel.

 

Victorian Student Pass

The Victorian Student Pass gives you unlimited travel on metropolitan trains, trams and buses, on all regional town bus services and all V/Line train and coach services operating wholly within Victoria.

The pass is a myki and should be shown to public transport staff on request when travelling on services where myki is not operating.

To travel on this pass, you must also have a VPT Student Concession Card with your pass number endorsed on your concession card.  The pass and concession card must be carried at all times when travelling.

Regional Transit Student Passes

This pass provides you with unlimited travel on all buses within the transit bus system and limited V/Line train services.

Passes for Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo are mykis and should be shown to public transport staff on request when travelling on services where myki is not operating.

To travel on this pass, you must also have a VPT Student Concession Card with your pass number endorsed on your concession card.  The pass and concession card must be carried at all times when travelling.

 Applying for a Victorian Public Transport Student Concession Card or Student Pass

2012 Victorian Public Transport (VPT) Student Concession Cards are now available for sale. The 2012 Victorian Public Transport Student Concession Card and Student Pass application form (available to download below) will be processed at Premium Stations, staffed V/Line stations and the MetShop from that date. If primary, secondary or tertiary students do not already have a concession myki, you may also receive a free registered concession myki upon request when applying for your VPT Concession Card.

Lodging your application

You can lodge your application at:

the MetShop
Corner of Swanston and Little Collins streets, Melbourne
Applications are accepted Monday - Friday 9.30am - 5pm, Saturday 9.30am - 12 noon.

Premium Stations
Applications are accepted Monday - Friday after 9.30am. Some stations may be unable to process applications between 3.30pm - 6.00pm on weekdays. Also accepted all day Saturday and Sunday.

Staffed V/Line stations and V/Line ticket agents.

Payment
Cheques are accepted. The cheque must have the account holder's name, address, phone number and driver's licence number written on the back of the cheque.

You can also pay with debit and credit cards (Visa and MasterCard only).

 

 Important things to remember when travelling

You must carry your concession card with you when travelling on public transport and when travelling with your student pass. If you don't carry the right cards with you when travelling, you risk an infringement.

As the Victorian Student Pass provide access to public transport outside normal travel to and from school (school holidays, weekends and public holidays), it can not be used to claim the Department of Education conveyance allowance.
